Illustrate the Invisible Contest

World Wide Hearing

World Wide Hearing presents the ILLUSTRATE THE INVISIBLE contest

Are you an illustrator, photographer, graphic designer, artist, or visual storyteller? World Wide Hearing wants you to submit an image that best expresses the experience of hearing loss among children.

Hearing loss is an invisible disability that affects 68 million children worldwide. It prevents them from connecting with their families and friends, going to school, and growing up happy and healthy in their communities. World Wide Hearing needs your help to tell their story.

We’re casting a wide net: you can submit a photo, a drawing, a painting, digital art, an infographic, a collage, and even a video. You can also combine visuals with text (so long as the final result is still an image). It’s up to you.

DEADLINE EXTENDED: Sunday, September 30th, 2012.

COST: Free!

HOW TO ENTER: Please send an email with your entry and contact information (name, address, and telephone number) to contest@wwhearing.org. Your personal information will not be shared with anyone and is only used by World Wide Hearing to contact you regarding your entry or to notify you that you’ve won.

WHAT MAKES A SUCCESSFUL SUBMISSION?

Your work should grab people’s attention and get them to notice or understand the problem of hearing loss among children. Below are some examples of memorable images used to promote awareness about disabilities.

FAQ:

Who can enter?

Anybody!

How many images can I submit?

As many as you like.

Are there prizes?

Yes, there is a cash prize of $250 CAD. Winners will also have their work featured prominently in World Wide Hearing awareness-raising campaigns and on our website.

What if my image is not selected — what happens to it once the contest is over?

World Wide Hearing plans to publish the winner’s image as well as a number of honourable mention entries on our web site (we will keep the online versions low-resolution and watermark them so that your work cannot be extracted and distributed without your consent).

TECHNICAL STUFF

Is there a preferred size to the images?

There is no limit to the physical size of your image. That being said, many of our communications materials are distributed in print, so images whose proportions are well suited to standard letter-size paper (8.5” x 11”) are appreciated.

What type of file can I submit?

Photoshop: If you submit a Photoshop file, please make sure it’s saved as an uncompressed JPG, in CMYK, and has a minimum resolution of 300dpi. Make sure the file is “flattened” so that any fonts or effects are not lost when opened on World Wide Hearing’s computers. Please submit a low-res JPG so that we can compare/contrast with your high-res entry.

Illustrator: If you submit an Illustrator file, please make sure it’s saved as a PDF or EPS, and in CMYK. All fonts need to be converted to outlines. It is always safest to “save down” the file to the lowest possible Illustrator version (ie. CS1) in order to make sure there is no corruption of the files once World Wide Hearing receives it. With Illustrator files please submit a low-res JPG so that World Wide hearing can make sure it has received the file as it is intended to be seen.

Please note that any photo files that are embedded in your Illustrator file must be in CMYK and have a resolution of 300dpi.

Video: If you submit a video, please make sure it’s saved as an AVI or MP4 file using the H.264 codec in at least 720p resolution (1080p preferred).

Mixed-Media: Some entrants may choose to create an image with mixed-media that cannot be properly displayed as a scanned image. We ask that you submit it by mail or in person. It must be post-marked or dropped off at World Wide Hearing’s office no later than July 31st, 2012. Please note that we will not return your submission unless you specify your desire to see it returned. World Wide Hearing will contact you to make arrangements.

Send it to:
World Wide Hearing
239 Notre-Dame St. West, Suite #402
Montreal QC, H2Y 1T4, Canada

What if my file is huge—how do I send it?

If your image is over 20MB we ask that you place your files in a Dropbox folder and send us the link. Here’s how that works:

To share a file, simply right-click on the item or folder in your desktop Dropbox, and click ‘Dropbox > Get Link.’ That’s it. The link can then be shared by any means—emailed, texted, tweeted, whatever—to give others access to your files, even if they don’t use Dropbox.

How should I name my files?
Please title your files with your name (ie. “john-smith-photo.pdf”).
